Science Fiction/Fantasy

In the not-so-distant future, a diverse cast of characters inherit a New York that has been flooded and overwhelmed as a result of the environmental, economic, and social disasters we are facing today. New York 2140 is timely and relevant and more realistic than the sci-fi I typically read. Significantly, it purposes a future in which ethics and moral reasoning are still being undermined by the status quo. I’d recommend reading it with friends! - Ashley

I loved Becky Chambers’ The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet so much. While it was more of a vignette, A Closed and Common Orbit, its sequel, is more focused on two specific characters, Lovey and Pepper. Identity is a strong theme that more than one of the characters struggles with. I love that even in space, even hundreds of years from now, with all our technological advances, we still struggle with who we are. - Karena

Jacqueline Carey excels at creating lush worlds close to our own and this one is not to be missed. In this retelling of The Tempest, Miranda is left in the dark as to her father’s plans and even her own origins, but that won’t stop her from searching out the truth while also exploring her feelings for Caliban, her father’s ensorceled servant. Escaping to their island and immersing myself in this fantastical world was a major delight. - Ivy

I finally picked this book up at the behest of our former Commander-in-Chief, who claimed he read it as a way to escape. While certainly this is an immersive book, it is also one that challenges you, forces you to think and learn every moment you are reading it. As a work in translation it is phenomenal, with the translator’s notes prodding you into yet deeper understanding. It’s intensely smart, fascinating and completely blew my mind. So while I definitely appreciated the recommendation, I think this is a little more than “escapist” reading. - Jax

When the world burns and you lose those you love, what do you do? Butler is one of the greatest American writers of science fiction we’ve ever known, and this is my favorite of her works – a dystopian future (before it was cool) where a young black woman on a post-apocalyptic road trip decides not just to survive, but thrive – and bring the rest of the world up with her. - Jocelyn

Dead gods. Fallen empires. Old atrocities. And people trying to pick up the pieces after. Also, spies. And a murder. These are the ingredients making up a book incredibly fun to lose oneself in – and also shockingly thoughtful (amidst the espionage and monster fights) and resonant to real life questions of history, accountability, and the challenge of making a better future. - Jocelyn

Mongrels is about families and the strangeness of growing up; about the truths that hide in lies. It’s about Mack trucks and werewolves. A young boy is ferried across the deep south by his aunt and uncle as they struggle to survive life on the run. Jones delivers an immersive and raw journey which deftly juxtaposes tender moments with unflinching grit. - Kelly

How do you live when everyone forgets you as soon as you're out of their presence? It started when Hope was a teenager and her parents forgot to set a place for her at the dinner table. Today she is a thief who can steal a necklace right off of someone's neck. This is a mesmerizing novel about an amazing character as well as a commentary about some of society's biggest fears. - Trey

The first in a trilogy, A Darker Shade of Magic involves four Londons, each with varying levels of magic, a bi-eyed boy with an ever-changing coat who can traverse them, a thief who finds herself in a London not her own, and a prince who is terrified by the responsibilities that are expected of him. I found it to be a fun adventure with compelling characters. - Karena

An excellently fun rom-com in our near future. Briddy’s about to get everything she wants—the man of her dreams and an escape from her invasive, crazy family—when the impossible happens. Now she’s stuck with the last person she’d expect, trying to fix the situation before she loses everything. Connie Willis’ sharp wit and social critique work to make the sci-fi–driven hijinks and romance into a thoroughly charming story. - Jocelyn
