Science Fiction/Fantasy

This is a crazy-fun fast-paced thriller with just a touch of the digital world that Stephenson is so well known for. Some of the story takes place inside a video game world, and some of the spy toys are beyond what you might find elsewhere (but I bet they really exist). It's addictive and exciting, the writing is beautiful, and the payoff is excellent.

A thrilling, action-packed adventure, complete with sexy special agents, misfit computer geniuses, and Stephensons’ excellently nerdy wit—this book made me think Ian Fleming crossed with Cory Doctorow. Reminiscent of his bestselling Cryptonomicon, this book is that combination of great storytelling, intelligent explanations, and technological thrills that made me love Stephenson in the first place.

Intelligent and insightful, Margaret Atwood is the perfect author to write about the science fiction genre. This collection includes personal reflections, lectures, and essays on specific books. I found the last section to be the most interesting, and very enjoyable even though I had not read the title she was discussing. In Other Worlds is a great read for all fans of Atwood’s or of the genre.

Any release by Pratchett gets me super excited, but the books featuring Commander Vimes are always my favorites. In this 39th Discworld novel we’re promised a vacation that just won’t take, “sly shout-outs to Jane Austen and gritty police procedurals” (Publisher’s Weekly), and the kind of in-the-gutter investigations at which His Grace Sir Samuel, the Duke of Ankh is so adept.

If you love really interesting systems of magic and you haven’t yet discovered Sanderson, you owe it to yourself to check him out. The Alloy of Law is a stand-alone novel set in the world of his amazing Mistborn series, but a little bit into the future. We still have the fascinating Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy that drove the original trilogy, but now it’s translated into more of a Wild West setting. Publisher’s Weekly says, “Part Sherlock Holmes, part X-Men, this exciting stand-alone adventure is full of close shaves, shootouts, and witty banter.” —Nici

What happens when death becomes the exception rather than the rule? Magary’s novel is quirky, hilarious (in that gallows humor way), and thoroughly entertaining as he explores the implications of this possible scientific “advancement.” Narrator John Farrell’s voice was so endearing, and his adventures in End Specialization are so wacky, that I was unprepared for the stomach-dropping finale. Much like The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Postmortal uses a not-so-distant dystopian future to make very strong points about life today. I loved it, and it’s still haunting me.

As the Washington Post says, “Moers is equal parts J.K  Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shel Silverstein.” This installment of Zamonian history is a wild romp of everything book related. Filled to the brim with literary puns and inside jokes, this quirky adventure will have the book-lover in you reeling with delight.

Written even before Facebook and Google took over so much of our lives, William’s Otherland looks forward to a time where life is lived in the virtual. This epic journey travels not just through the landscape of our future, but through all the worlds of humankinds’ imagination, as ordinary people start noticing the secrets of the virtual Net, and follow them to the darker truths of humanity.
