Mystery

I loved this book! It was so much fun to read, and the characters were an absolute delight. The story of the first woman sheriff’s deputy, or more specifically, how she became the first female sheriff's deputy, this clever book has it all—action, eccentric characters, a vivid  historical setting, carrier pigeons, and more. This is Amy Stewart’s first work of fiction, and it’s infused with her drily witty sense of humor and warm storytelling. I adored the Kopp sisters, and sincerely hope there is a book two (and three and four...)!  —Flannery

This book had me completely hooked by the end of the first chapter. Filled with morally ambiguous, damaged people fighting the various forces trying to bury them, plus some creepy bad guys and a serial killer on the loose, it had me totally engrossed in its blood-spattered pages. I can be a tough one to surprise, but I never saw the ending coming and I was left shocked and completely satisfied.  —Flannery

Yes, friends, it’s here—the greatly anticipated new Laurie King book! I know the question you’re all asking: Is she going to kill off Mary Russell? I’m not going to tell you, but I will say that this is yet another wonderful book from our beloved local author. Not only are her books great mysteries, but each one is like a special visit with beloved friends, and The Murder of Mary Russell is no different.  —Flannery

The always-entertaining Don Winslow has written a sprawling tale of the drug war that is relayed in unflinching transmissions from multiple characters, each person but a cog in the machine. The characters take part in a cross-border drama of futile necessity, all sides wounded physicallyand psychologically by the violence, by loss. The stakes rise to nauseating heights: losing means not a forfeit of life, but of humanity.  —Dillon

An intriguing thriller with lots of twists and turns, Pleasantville is a dark political drama. A missing girl, a reluctant lawyer, a community struggling with economic downturns, and potentially dirty politicians all come together in this engrossing mystery that put me in mind of early John Grisham and Dennis Lehane.  —Nici

A story of men who are not yet men, of boys pretending, of a city that doesn’t care. Bill Beverly’s debut novel of an LA gang thrusts us into the lives of four teenage up-and-comers. Hotheaded, with everything to lose and everything to prove, the boys’ inevitable reckoning unfolds in gritty, rhythmic prose, even as one of them slowly questions their impulsive violence.  —Dillon

Detective Casey Duncan has a secret that has finally caught up to her. To save her life, she flees to a town where people go to disappear. But Rockton has secrets of its own, and Casey is about to be in the middle of them. I loved Kelly Armstrong’s fantasy novels, and her first foray into the mystery genre was a welcome surprise. The town and characters were particularly compelling, and I hope for a sequel!  —Flannery

Witty, yet down to earth. Tough as nails, yet vulnerable somewhere on the inside. Somewhere untouchable. Elouise Norton is a shot of adrenaline for the detective genre. Sure, she ruffles feathers and deals in sarcasm like every detective since Marlowe, but she’s a rogue in a man’s world, an underdog with dimension and gravitas. When investigating a young girl’s apparent suicide, only Lou sees the killer under the crime, and only she can stop him.   —Dillon

Complex in both style and content, Nguyen’s The Sympathizer offers an original and wholly rewarding reading experience. Our narrator chronicles Saigon’s fall and the political and personal fallout that ensues. A U.S.-educated Viet Cong mole, he undermines the country that has molded him to serve the country of his birth. As his external life collapses so too does his internal, evoking a heartbreaking, darkly comic view of what nationalism truly means.  —Dillon
