Megan's Reviews

Danya Kukafka’s debut novel ticks so many of my good-read boxes: Beautifully written; well-paced; great character development; and then, more specifically, multiple points of view and intertwining story lines. Told from three distinct perspectives, Girl in Snow takes different paths to the same ending as each character passes by, circles around, and eventually collides with the others as this small Colorado town deals with the aftermath of the homicide of a local teen. - Megan

Not just for crafters, Alanna Okun’s essays about life as a independent woman in the modern age are written from the heart. She explores timeless subjects from learning to live with yourself (literally and figuratively), to body image, facing fears and anxieties of all kinds, and (of course) fitting knitting and what it is to “be a crafter” into everyday life. Alanna is relatable and interesting, funny, and thoughtful. I like her and I think you will, too. - Megan

Holy fish sauce, this book is amazing. Because of it, my to-cook list has grown to include things like Tom Som Kai Baan (“Village Chicken” Soup) and Yam Won Sen (Glass Noodle Salad). Every page has an ingredient I’ve never heard of or a cooking technique I never thought I’d try. For someone like me whose favorite food growing up was mac and cheese, Pok Pok’s recipes are a wonderful journey into the land of Thai street food. - Megan

With essays on travel, family, good food, and (of course) knitting, Clara Parkes’s second collection of essays, Knitlandia, proved to be a wonderfully entertaining ride around the world of knitting. In A Stash of One’s Own, Parkes uses her love of knitting and her writer’s sensibility to compile her next installment of essays by new and old crafters, from favorites like Amy Christoffers and Kristine Vejar to fine newer voices. - Megan

Seeing the slow fashion movement gain momentum and popularity over the last several years has been a source of joy in my life. Few crafters out there embody the lifestyle of slow fashion better than Natalie Chanin of Alabama Stitch Book. Her new book is peppered with detailed shots of gorgeous garments and samples of a variety of hand-embroidered stitches, from the beautifully basic to the incredibly complex. - Megan

Beautiful photography, whimsical staging, and organization solutions! The first Remodelista book was an inspiring design book, and this second volume shows all the organizational tips and tricks you need to know. It’s the younger, hipper, cooler version of Real Simple (which I also love). - Megan

Most self-respecting sewers know how to laugh at themselves when a project doesn’t go as planned or doesn’t look quite as chic as they had hoped. With Pattern Behavior, you can laugh at something other than yourself between projects. A crafty version of the classic postcard, with its saucy captions it lets you see what those vintage McCall’s girls are up to when you leave them alone in your pattern drawer. - Megan

An excellent balance of thoughtful and hilarious, sharp and poignant, Vacationland is a beautifully written collection of essays on getting older, learning how to be yourself, and tricking strangers into thinking they’ve seen a ghost. Hodgman’s unique voice comes through clearly in his matter-of-fact writing style and it feels like he’s right here talking to you (and only you). If you’ve read everything he’s already written and you’re out of episodes of Judge John Hodgman to listen to, get this book. - Megan
