Ian's Reviews

As someone who grew up with a British father and an American mother, I was excited to read about “the common language that separates” them. Although some parts weren’t the revelations I was expecting but simply a confirmation, I imagine much of this book will provide fun insights into the language the reader uses every but perhaps haven’t given much thought since their school days. - Ian

The book cuts a large swath across the many fields of mathematics, tilling them for satisfying brain food. But the parts I enjoyed most about the book are when the authors take concepts they’ve broken down in mathematical detail—such as randomness and prime numbers—then philosophize about them and what they mean to our everyday lives. Are unknown digits of pi actually random? Does math exist outside of the observer? It’s a fun trip. - Ian

Though considered a backwater during the centuries following Roman rule, Britain experienced a great deal of development leading up to its rise during the Medieval era. Adams recreates this progression from his own experience in the field and research in the halls of academia. Part travel writing, part history, this was a joyous trek through the home country. - Ian

It’s all here. And with a mystery of mysterious proportions to tear it all apart. This book is a grand ‘ole time. - Ian

Having watched former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich’s short yet informative videos on numerous topics related to the economy, I’m excited for this compilation of his essays and cartoon illustrations (drawn on a large sketchpad with magic markers). Reich has always been able to make perplexing subjects accessible to those of us who are less informed, and I’m sure this book will be no different. - Ian

Much like Hannibal himself, this book punches far above its weight class. Although stripped for brevity, it hits with the impact of a tome two or three times its size. Hunt deftly tells the story, both personal and public, of one of the world’s greatest generals. - Ian

Many of the world’s signs, sigils, and symbols, both known and obscure, are included with descriptions of their history and meaning along with pages of greater length explaining pantheons and greater concepts. This book has been a great resource for uncovering broad swaths or looking for something more minute. - Ian
