I dream of fantasy books like this one. The clarity of Novik’s world-building and the vividness of her protagonist, Agnieszka, set the stage for a vivacious and satisfying fairy tale. Uprooted satisfies the same part of my heart that Tamora Pierce and Ellen Kushner did in my childhood. For fantasy fans, I cannot recommend it enough. - Clara

I came away from this book awed by a master. The chapters reveal the story of a great artist’s life, and show us layers of a personality we can’t quite trust but can’t help empathize with. The book captures a specific historical moment and, at the same time, evokes the dreams we all have of becoming our own people and the consequences of our decisions. - Jocelyn

In these six short stories (and “short” is relative here; a couple of these are novellas) Johnson spans the globe, from San Francisco to Germany, from post-Katrina New Orleans to North Korea, capturing the lives of ordinary people (and a couple of total weirdos) in extraordinary circumstances. This is quite simply one of the best short story collections of the 21st century. - Rico

This book is sublime. Smith processes friendship, stages of life, and Brexit through lyrical, breathless storytelling. Smith captures the stillness and wistfulness of the season beautifully, making Autumn the most healing and invigorating book I've read in ages. - Clara

Exley is one of those writers who, essentially, had one great story to tell—the story of his disastrous life—and man does he tell it well. An alcoholic and general failure, he was a college classmate of football great Frank Gifford (husband of Kathie Lee) and had a life-long (non-romantic) obsession with him that he details in hilarious, tragic and completely unforgettable ways. - Rico

When a giant squid washes ashore in London and then disappears after being brought to the Natural History Museum, all hell breaks loose. Cults, old gods, gatekeepers, secret police, and the undead. It’s all here. And with a mystery of mysterious proportions to tear it all apart. This book is a grand ‘ole time. - Ian

This blend of historical fiction and selkie mythology packs a punch even greater than its cinematic adaptation, John Sayles’s film The Secret of Roan Inish. Young Fiona McConville has returned to the small cluster of Scottish islands to stay with her grandparents. When she sees Jamie—her younger brother who was lost at sea years before—alive and running about the abandoned island of Ron Mor, she is determined to reconnect with him. In language both poetic and practical, Fry captures the mystery and magic of the sea and the voice of the Scottish fishing families who call it home. Perfect for fans of Anne of Green Gables or Sarah, Plain and Tall. Ages 8–11. - Molly

Ten stories, edited by Ellen Oh, cofounder of We Need Diverse Books, begin with Matt de la Peña’s terrific, subtle basketball story “How to Transform an Everyday Ordinary Hoop Court Into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium.” This unusually strong collection of short stories for 4th- to 7th-graders continues with authors you know, like Grace Lin and Jacqueline Woodson (her story broke my heart, she keeps doing that), and others you may not know yet. Ages 9–13. - Ga

Much more than a tongue twister, this sweet and joyful picture book astounds and astonishes with each successive read aloud. Wary for just the briefest moment, the dog and the hog leap into play, whirling and reeling around each other and right off the pages. Has there ever been a more perfect word pairing—or animal pairing—than greyhound and groundhog? Ages 2 and up. - Michelle

Those droll, amusing, Caldecott-winning Steads have gone off the deep end again in the loveliest of ways. What happens in this contemporary fairy tale—morphing from fragments of a fairy tale Mark Twain told his daughters—I’m not absolutely certain. But it happens so delightfully, so beguilingly, you will be dazzled. (It’s particularly nice when the author Stead argues with the author Twain about the text.) And dazzling too are Erin Stead’s illustrations (woodblock, ink, and pencil). She has a light, whimsical touch, oddly solid, that you can utterly count on. Grades 2 and up. - Ga
