I love a good serial killer mystery, and this is one of the most enjoyable, thrilling entries in the genre. A killer uses geocaching spots to cache his kills, taunting the investigators with cryptic clues. The gruesome, twisting story kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, and the ending took me by surprise. If you want a good mystery, check this one out. -Flannery

Jonathan Franzen’s Purity is excellent. It’s addictive, worldly and at times wildly inappropriate. It deals heavily with themes of surveillance, communication, postwar communism and freedom of information. Near and far, morality clashes with unfailing human desires to create a rich and emotionally dynamic landscape. It’s definitely my favorite fiction of the year.  --Ashley

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were the best of friends. They were also two of the women who did the most for the women’s suffrage movement, and their strong will changed the country. This book chronicles not only their fight for women’s right to vote, but also their friendship. Upon her death, Elizabeth Cady Stanton asked that Susan B. Anthony’s photo be placed on her coffin. Isn’t that the kind of friendship we should all aspire to?  –Flannery

This small book explores with great agility all that a novel can be, with its poetry, its allegory, its humor, dark, lovely and raw. This is a story about grief, told by a widowed husband, his two young sons, and the crow who comes to tend them, raucously and with great feeling. Porter has written a remarkable novel, suffused with the love of  literature and sound, one that can be read over and over; out loud may be best.  —Melinda

This book had me completely hooked by the end of the first chapter. Filled with morally ambiguous, damaged people fighting the various forces trying to bury them, plus some creepy bad guys and a serial killer on the loose, it had me totally engrossed in its blood-spattered pages. I can be a tough one to surprise, but I never saw the ending coming and I was left shocked and completely satisfied.  —Flannery

Detective Casey Duncan has a secret that has finally caught up to her. To save her life, she flees to a town where people go to disappear. But Rockton has secrets of its own, and Casey is about to be in the middle of them. I loved Kelly Armstrong’s fantasy novels, and her first foray into the mystery genre was a welcome surprise. The town and characters were particularly compelling, and I hope for a sequel!  —Flannery

Witty, yet down to earth. Tough as nails, yet vulnerable somewhere on the inside. Somewhere untouchable. Elouise Norton is a shot of adrenaline for the detective genre. Sure, she ruffles feathers and deals in sarcasm like every detective since Marlowe, but she’s a rogue in a man’s world, an underdog with dimension and gravitas. When investigating a young girl’s apparent suicide, only Lou sees the killer under the crime, and only she can stop him.   —Dillon

A mysterious watch in the pocket of Nathaniel Steepleton makes its way through Victorian London, leading its owner toward his destiny. On the way, Steepleton meets the watch’s mysterious owner, Keita Mori, and an Oxford physicist, Grace Carrow. The story is fascinating and keeps you guessing, while the Victorian-style prose creates a picture of a city in turmoil. Even with the book’s dark overtone, I couldn’t help but be charmed.  —Ivy

This book is a fire under the butt for any aspiring writer. It is a scathing (and accurate) analysis of key aspects of our current pop culture. It is a review of the major upsets in the sci-fi/geek world in the past few years, from Gamergate to Puppygate. It is above all an inspiration to all to stay aware, to stay responsible, to stay angry, to stay hungry. Kameron Hurley is my new hero.   —Jocelyn
