Set in a fictional town based on Day’s real Indiana home, the chapters melt together in a glittering, nostalgic portrait of the winter home of the Great Porter Circus between 1884 and 1939. Think Winesburg, Ohio plus Water for Elephants. It was a finalist for The Story Prize and was recently made into a musical at Ball State University.

This book is utterly depraved & also brilliant. Dewitt’s narrator is a bartender in a very unhip dive bar. As he shares his attempts to escape his circumstances, he captures the world of the bar and its inhabitants in all their dysfunctional alcoholic glory. Think Bukowski, but from the bartender’s point of view. You will be disgusted and you will laugh like a hyena.

People have sent Randall Munroe amazingly creative questions, like “Could you build a jetpack using downward-firing machine guns?” and he endeavors to answer them with the enthusiastic tenacity of STEM graduate students trying to please their dissertation boards. Fans of Munroe’s wildly popular comic xkcd don’t need any convincing. For the rest of you, think of What If? as the natural extension of shows like MythBusters— except with completely untestable scenarios and much geekier humor. Trust me, it’s transcendent.

Inspired by the friendship of Flannery O’Connor and Robert Lowell, this novel imagines two new characters and captures the writer’s life of the late ‘50s, complete with artist colonies, East Village life, and a martini or two. Written entirely in letters, Frances and Bernard ruminates on art, religion, faith, and friendship in a way that only the correspondence between a novelist and a poet could.

I adore Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking as much as anybody, but Richard Olney’s books about French food are the ones that have made the biggest impact on my cooking. Olney was an American who found his place in the world in Provence, and through his books, brought the joys of French country cooking to American readers. Simple French Food, which Alice Waters credits as being one of her greatest sources of inspiration for cooking at Chez Panisse, showcases seasonal, unpretentious food to perfection.

Few people are familiar with the life of Emma Lazarus, the poet behind the iconic lines inscribed on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses…”. Glaser movingly tells Lazarus’s story, while the delicately composed and whimsical art of Claire Nivola creates an elegant and playful vision of her life. A striking biography and a beautiful picture book. Grades K–4.

A big, generous book that I turn to again and again for wonderful dessert recipes. Totally charming and user-friendly. And Sax’s “Best-Ever Pumpkin Pie”? It’s true. I’ve never made, or tasted, better.

Bechdel's illustrations and writing take us into the history of psycho analysis and back in the pursuit of solving the complicated connection she feels toward her mother, who can be in turns judgmental, praising, kind and indifferent. Bechdel's queerness is a big issue between them, as is her decision to divulge family secrets in her work.

Mr. Wuffles isn’t exactly lazy, he’s just got better things to do than play with toys. For example, stalking the little aliens who just fled their malfunctioning spaceship for the safety of the wall vent. Will they be able to get back to their ship? Only if they learn to outwit one very fixated black cat. Who else but David Wiesner could have invented such a hilarious and oddly plausible tale? A perfect cat book and another wordless masterpiece from the three-time Caldecott winner. Ages 4 & up.

Sixth-grader Ruby Pepperdine is "good at figuring out what she was supposed to do," but since her grandmother Gigi’s death, she’s lost the center of everything. The story is told in flashbacks circles around the truth. What if there is no "supposed to"? Ruby, missing Gigi, misses opportunity after opportunity to remain close to her best friend, her family, her town. This sweet novel is simultaneously commonplace and complex, poignant, and oh-so-gently funny, like life, like death—like love, which is the center of everything.
