Everyone who knows me knows that I don’t cook. My husband makes all our meals. If you want bland chicken, I’m your gal. The one exception? Baking. Nothing gives me more pleasure than gifting home-baked goods. Mark Bittman has written a book that gives me every tool I could want in baking for the rest of my life. The recipes are easy to use and, nearly as important, accurate about how much time they take. A perfect gift for the baking enthusiast in your life.   —Ivy

Dorie Greenspan writes outstanding cookbooks. Her recipes are spot on and she is a terrific writer and teacher. All of my copies of her books (most notably Baking: From My Home to Yours) are dog-eared and stained. Published just in time for the holiday baking season, Dorie’s Cookies is full of great recipes for all kinds of cookies, from brownies and bars to rolled and drop cookies. I made the Peanut Butter and Fudge Brownies for a Bookshop party and have never received so many compliments. Don’t miss our book talk and signing with Dorie Greenspan on Friday, November 11th, at 7:00 p.m. Sample recipes from Dorie’s Cookies at this event!                                                  —S.B.

I wanted to eat at Marcus Samuelsson’s Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster, ever since it opened in 2010, and happily got my chance earlier this year. It was so worth the wait. Everything we had—from the cocktails to the cornbread, fried chicken to fresh donuts—was so fantastic that we agreed it was one of the best meals we’d ever eaten. Samuelsson is sharing Red Rooster’s recipes in this fantastic new cookbook, which not only captures the food but the spirit of the restaurant and the history, vibrancy, and culture of Harlem. Highly recommended.         —S.B.

It is a rare treat to have memoirs by two of the best soccer players of all time come out in the same year. And, no, I am not qualifying Abby Wambach or Carli Lloyd as female soccer players, for they have proven themselves as elite within the entire sport—both World Cup and Olympic champions, Wambach as the highest international goal scorer and Lloyd as the 2015 FIFA Player of the Year. Known not only for their talent on the field, these women bring their struggles, triumphs, passions, and personalities (as well as an inside look at the USWNT!) to their books, and yes, reader, sports fan, feminist, human, you need them both, because together Wambach and Lloyd represent the power and diversity of the human spirit in sport. —Melinda

Steve Young, the star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1990s, transports us to many seminal moments in his riveting memoir. By writing about his life, from his father’s influence on his work ethic (his father was aptly nicknamed “Grit”) to the anxieties that plagued Steve’s time on the field, to his pursuit of a law degree to quench his insatiable thirst for knowledge, Young brings us closer to understanding what drove him to the pinnacle of athletic success and into the hearts of the 49er Faithful everywhere (including mine). —Casey

Nothing titillates the mind of the modern intellectual quite like a finely crafted essay. In the latest iteration, edited by everyone’s favorite local author and literary icon Jonathan Franzen, The Best American Essays 2016 features excellent nonfiction from the likes of Joyce Carol Oates, Oliver Sacks, and a slew of talented others, including Bookshop’s own Richard “Rico” Lange, whose essay stands out among those of the other luminaries.   —Aric

Living history through another’s eyes is a long tradition in American literature, but it is often from a very white perspective. Peter Ho Davies, through his superb mastery of language, shows us what it means to be an American while also being Chinese. Davies takes four unique characters from different eras and draws readers into their story at once distinct and familiar. Over and over, I recalibrated my understanding of history and how much is owed to overlooked, but vast communities.  —Ivy

Challenging the status quo isn’t easy, and though becoming the first female deputy sheriff is hard as it gets, Constance Kopp isn’t one to back down. When a mistake threatens her new career, she throws every ounce of nerve and grit she has into fixing it—with some advice from her wonderfully eccentric sisters, of course! I loved this great historical mystery, and I’m thrilled that we’ll have Amy Stewart here to talk about it September 28th!  —Flannery

Honestly, almost any Bill Peet book could go on this list. Clever, funny, with silly rhyming words to rival Dr. Seuss, Bill Peet’s books are perfect for children. His colored pencil drawings are wonderful, and his stories have a flow and cadence that makes them perfect for reading out loud.  --Flannery

I loved this book! It was so much fun to read, and the characters were an absolute delight. The story of the first woman sheriff’s deputy, or more specifically, how she became the first female sheriff's deputy, this clever book has it all—action, eccentric characters, a vivid  historical setting, carrier pigeons, and more. This is Amy Stewart’s first work of fiction, and it’s infused with her drily witty sense of humor and warm storytelling. I adored the Kopp sisters, and sincerely hope there is a book two (and three and four...)!  —Flannery
