In the formal, patterned language of oral epic poetry (think Beowulf), readers are given details of a battle between opposing forces. To save the essence of civilization, Young Waeglim forges the Art of the Valorim into a chain and hurls it into space. And such is the measure of his desperation and power that the necklace streaks through the galaxies, past stars and comets, and lands on Earth in 12-year-old Tommy’s way-too-babyish Ace Robotroid lunchbox (a birthday gift from his grandmother). Two worlds intersect and inextricably combine and nothing will ever be the same for Tommy and his family. There is such beauty and yearning (and humor) in this novel—in all of Gary Schmidt’s novels, really—and though this book may rend your heart, I recommend it wholeheartedly. Grades 5–8.

With Foer's crafty storytelling and Oskar's unconventional narration, you can almost forget that this is a story about a boy who lost his father on September 11th. It becomes a story about 9-year-old Oskar's treasure hunt, his way of making everyday occurrences seem spectacular, and the strangers that he befriends along the way. Precocious Oskar's story is as entertaining as it is moving.

On the surface, this story is nothing new: a gutter-bound London prostitute aspires for more. Yet Faber’s magnetic narrative voice, like an actor breaking the 4th wall, makes us conspirators in Sugar’s rags-to-riches campaign. Vibrant, sexy, and smart, Crimson Petal is simply a masterpiece of storytelling. Those 834 pages will fly by and have you begging for more.

I absolutely loved reading this cookbook and love cooking from it. I was captivated by Knauer’s stories of his family’s farm, of the hard work that goes into running it, and of the tremendous rewards—culinary and otherwise—harvested there. Knauer is also a fantastic cook: His recipes—like Asparagus and Baby Potato Roast, Garlic-Pesto Roast Chicken, and Magic Peach Cobbler—are seasonal, homey, and oh-so-appealing. This is the kind of straightforward yet creative cooking that I adore.

“This brave and beautiful memoir gets at the core of what it means to be a parent—how painful it can be, how scary it can get, and how rewarding it is. By facing a challenge that would try any of us, and beat many of us, Bissinger emerges a better man. He not only finds his son, but himself, and the reader finds something, too. After reading Father’s Day, I’ve rethought my assumptions about what makes a successful and worthy life.” —David Sheff, author of Beautiful Boy

“Humans face death with trepidation and elaborate rituals, but what about animals? Proffering lessons both spiritual and ecological, the author of the lovely The Mind of a Raven shows us the animal way of death, as when wolves, large cats, eagles, and weasels work in tandem to get rid of killed prey. Not just for animal lovers.” —Library Journal
