Bendis began this story of a young (white) woman violently taking on corrupt police and politicians in 2010. It likely would be a different story had he waited just a couple more years. That said, this grey-area epic (with gorgeous art by Alex Maleev) of one average person taking matters into her own hands - because no one else will - cannot help but strike a chord today. - Jocelyn

When this book was published twenty years ago, the impact was so powerful we’re still feeling the reverberations today. The most flat-out brilliant book of the 1990s, by a mile, it offers amazing erudition, terrifically sympathetic characters, and a mind-bending structure. And footnotes—lots and lots of footnotes. It’s also the funniest book I’ve ever read. - Rico

How do you live when everyone forgets you as soon as you're out of their presence? It started when Hope was a teenager and her parents forgot to set a place for her at the dinner table. Today she is a thief who can steal a necklace right off of someone's neck. This is a mesmerizing novel about an amazing character as well as a commentary about some of society's biggest fears. - Trey

There just aren’t enough robot camping stories. This science fiction adventure is part survival story and part celebration of wildness, with a quiet warning of climate change snaking through. We follow Roz the robot from the moment she is marooned on the island—and fortuitously activated by some curious otters—through her first harsh experiences with winter (one of the worst on record). Though faced with steep terrain and a steeper learning curve, our quirky hero Roz travels through each adversity with grace and amazing generosity. Peter Brown’s black-and-gray illustrations are sprinkled lightly throughout this book, gently giving form to his words. This near-future tale gives us a peek at the twists and turns technology might take and a chance to consider what we might do. Grades 3–5. —MICHELLE

A young boy feels overwhelmed by his unusual name, which he shares with his boisterous, strong, and loving father. Thunder Boy Jr. is eager to find a name that’s truly his own, and it is eventually granted to him by his thoughtful father: Now he’s “Lightning.” “Together my dad and I will become amazing weather.” Written by the brilliant Sherman Alexie (in his first foray into picture books), this story is illustrated by the multi-award–winning artist Yuyi Morales. Her art sparkles and crashes and bursts with emotion, while the textures of her bold, multimedia collages are taken from the clay bricks and wood of a crumbling, antique house in Mexico, near where she has her studio. Ages 4 & up.  —TERA

Everything about this picture book is stunning, from the profound and tender story of renowned artist Louise Bourgeois, to the whimsical visual imaginings of illustrator Isabelle Arsenault that riff off Bourgeois’ art. Best known for her massive and enigmatic sculptures of spiders, Bourgeois’ life was heavily influenced by the threads of comfort and love and loss between her mother and her and by the textures of her childhood, which resulted in the experimental fabric art of her later years. A first-rate introduction for children and a treat for adults. Grades 2 & up. —TERA

If you miss seeing Jon Stewart’s charming smirk on your television every evening, you will love this book. The foreword is written by Jon Stewart and the book has behind-the-scenes interviews with many of the show’s legendary reporters. It pays homage to the careers it jump-started and highlights many of the show’s most famous moments. It also serves as a nostalgic look at the only good thing about Bush’s presidency: The Daily Show’s coverage of it.        —Jade

Never have my expectations been so overwhelmingly, gratifyingly fulfilled. Is this book a fabulous introduction to the fan-fiction event Shipwreck? Is it so alluring a book that I am already planning a visit to witness Shipwreck for myself? Yes, absolutely. Is it chock full of erotica written by a variety of authors (including John Scalzi!), with a hilarious number of euphemisms for the human anatomy? Oh my, yes. Check it out; I bet you’ll be saying “yes” faster than you thought.                              —Jax

If you, like me, love the amazing Young Frankenstein, you might think you know the film backward and forward. But did you know that Gene Wilder wrote the script with Mel Brooks? That the hijinks on film were more than matched off screen, and that the crew made do on a shoestring budget? Brooks’ classic wit and energy in telling the story behind the movie make it a must-have for any fan of Dr. Frahenkensteen.                                                                         —Jax
